AbstractThis paper presents a model and process for shared decision making among teacher education faculty, PreK-12 educators, and College of Science and Mathematics (COSM) faculty at Wright State University (WSU), Ohio. WSU used a process model to plan and articulate the simultaneous renewal of the education of educators and school teachers. The College of Education and Human Service (CEHS) has had formal involvement in this ongoing process and has a well-established bridge with the COSM. WSU's redesigned teacher education curriculum, a graduate post-baccalaureate professional school model for middle and high school educators, is aligned with six formally established partnership school districts. All partners are actively involved in professional development activities and advisory committees. To examine the impact of science content taught to preservice and inservice teachers at the Science Mentor Professional Development Institute, various instruments were administered that assessed conceptual understanding of, and confidence and beliefs in, constructivist standards-based classrooms. Respondents indicated that program participation significantly changed teacher beliefs (e.g., teachers were more likely to believe that all students can learn to think scientifically) and increased their confidence in several areas (e.g., teachers felt more able to manage classes of students using hands-on/manipulative materials and to use cooperative learning groups).
