Abstract | This guide provides a family approach to college planning, with the goal of helping Latino students gain college entrance. Part 1 provides basic information about college, including information about how early parents should begin talking with their children about college, how parents can help their children plan for college, ensuring that children have access to challenging courses, the test required, how to apply, and seeking financial aid. Twenty-three resources are provided for finding out about financial aid. Part 2 is a workbook to be used by students and their families for planning for college. It includes practical tools for planning and gathering information and is organized in a step-by-step fashion. Sections cover creating a "to do" list; developing an action plan; creating timelines for selecting a college, applying for financial aid, and getting letters of recommendation; prioritizing various college features; creating a worksheet for rating colleges; identifying financial and other support; things to do and ask when visiting campuses; writing follow-up letters to colleges; and planning a budget. Eight resources present more information. An appendix presents Texas-specific information, including the tests required for higher education, and high school graduation requirements. Five resources provide further information about financial aid in Texas. (TD) |
