AbstractState directors of career and technical education (CTE) were asked about CTE's connection to workforce and economic development in their states. The CTE coordination rating scale that served as the basis of the national survey focused on the extent of coordination in the following areas: CTE's framework; CTE governance, CTE programs, CTE business partners, and CTE funding. The majority of state directors gave a rating of 3 (on a 4-point scale) to CTE's relationship to workforce and economic development within their state. Other findings were as follows: (1) coordination between CTE and general secondary and postsecondary education is generally good; (2) in 37 states, state departments of education bore responsibility for administering CTE and Perkins funds; (3) in most states, secondary CTE was administered by state boards of education whereas postsecondary CTE was more likely to be administered by state departments of labor; (4) tech prep and dual enrollment were the two most common ways of ensuring seamless transitions between secondary and postsecondary CTE; and (5) CTE business partners varied depending on individual states' needs and prevalent industries. (The CTE coordination rating scale is appended, along with lists of the state agencies other than state departments of education that receive Perkins funds and administer CTE in specific states.)
