Abstract	Drawing from her own experiences as well as those of other teachers, the author of this book shares a variety of useful and practical teacher-tested strategies that have helped young children experience success in writing. With easy-to-access information, the book provides teachers with: ways to build children's interest, enthusiasm, and effectiveness in writing by introducing "Elsewhere Expeditions,""Think About" Logs, Response Journals, Literature Retellings, and more; ways to build community in the classroom by sharing writing, noting the "good things" in each student's work, and discussing "constructive errors" so children can learn from their mistakes; ways to "scaffold," or put into place particular supports for children as long as they are needed; and ways to integrate writing into other subject areas, such as math, art, social studies, and science. Chapters in the book are: (1) Addressing Teacher Concerns; (2) Encouraging Young Writers: Practical Strategies; (3) Supporting Young Writers: A Variety of Formats; (4) Writing from Literature; (5) Writing from Experience; and (6) A Balancing Act: Literacy Across the Curriculum. Appendixes provide selected children's literature listings, suggested readings for teachers interested in learning more about writing in their classrooms, purchasing and construction information for materials mentioned in the text, and forms that assist in managing the literacy practices described in the book.
