| Abstract | This study examined the Internet's impact on college students' daily lives and the impact of that use on their academic and social routines. Students from 27 colleges and universities participated. The sample was tested and found to be reflective of the national population of college students. Roughly half the students were given a questionnaire asking questions about their academic use of the Internet; and half were given a questionnaire dealing with their social uses of the Internet. In all, 2,054 surveys were returned. In addition, data was collected by a team of graduate student researchers at the University of Illinois at Chicago observing behavior of college students at 10 Chicago area institutions of higher education. Additional material for the study was based on findings of surveys of Americans about their use of the Internet conducted by Princeton Survey Research Associates in 2001 and 2002 for the Pew Internet & American Life Project. A Summary of Findings at the beginning of this report highlights results under three main findings: college students are early adopters and heavy users of the Internet; college students say the Internet has enhanced their education; and college social life has been changed by the Internet.
