AbstractThis paper provides findings from the Study on School Violence and Prevention. During spring 1997, 886 middle-school and high-school principals from across the U.S. provided information about prevention activities in their schools. Information was again provided in 1998 by many of the same principals, as well as by students and teachers. The results indicate that schools experienced relatively low levels of serious violent crime, though some schools did experience serious violence and disorder. In many schools, high levels of less serious violent crime and property crime were common, particularly in middle schools. Some of the categories that were tracked included "schools reporting incidents to police,""victimization of students and teachers," and "effects of disorder on teachers and students." On the whole, students and teachers felt safe at schools, though about one-quarter had concerns about safety and disorder. In response to these problems, schools started many prevention activities, but the quality of these programs, in general, was low. For example, schools implemented a median of 14 different activities, but fewer than 60 percent of activities in certain categories met adequacy criteria. The results suggest that more attention should be focused on middle schools and that the quantity of prevention efforts should give way to quality. (Contains 25 references.) (RJM)
