AbstractThis report describes Austin, Texas' Austin Interfaith, which connects community institutions that can support families (e.g., schools, congregations, and civic organization) and builds the capacity of family members to participate fully in the economic system. Viewing schools as key neighborhood institutions, Austin Interfaith works directly with 18 public schools. It is one of five case studies in the Indicators Project on Education Organizing, which identified eight indicators of the impact of community organizing for school reform (leadership development, community power, social capital, public accountability, equity, school-community connection, positive school climate, and high quality curriculum and instruction). This report focuses on Austin Interfaith's accomplishments in four areas: leadership development, school-community connection, social capital, and educational equity. The report presents a model of the relationship of indicators to goals of the community organizing groups, introduces Austin Interfaith, describes the city and the new economy, and looks at indicators and measures. It concludes by discussing future directions for increasing participation by African Americans and changing the culture of the district. Three appendices present definitions of indicator areas, the Indicators Project advisory group, and Austin Interfaith charts (strategies, results, and data sources). (SM)
