AbstractThis guide offers insight, advice, examples, and resources aimed at community education practitioners in the United Kingdom who want to establish sustainable community education and neighborhood renewal programs promoting active citizenship and social change. The following topics are discussed: (1) neighborhoods in crisis; (2) proposed government policy changes for combating social exclusion, empowering local communities, and improving poor neighborhoods; (3) the rationale for change; (4) neighborhood renewal; (5) community and education; (6) outreach; (7) curriculum development; (8) getting started; (9) listening campaigns; (10) strength in numbers and the importance of partnership; (11) assessing program impacts; (12) building in sustainability; (13) spreading the word; and (14) letting go and moving on. The final section lists good practices, issues/challenges, and troubleshooting. The following are among the good practices presented: (1) relate to the wider social, cultural, and economic context in which participants are situated; (2) empower local people to have more influence over how adult learning and other social services are delivered; (3) value people's experience and expertise and work toward sustainable social change; (4) encourage constructive partnerships between local people and all interested agencies; and (5) concentrate on removing barriers to participation. A glossary and lists of 13 references and 12 useful contacts and networks are included. (MN)
