| Abstract | This publication addresses the practical and strategic responsibilities that go with the position of board chair when both the chair and the chief executive are determined to raise the bar for their board as a corporate body. While the chief executive is primarily responsible for leading and managing the institution, the chair of the board is primarily responsible for leading and managing the board. This publication does not address the chairs responsibility for presidential selection and departure, but it does discuss the four key responsibilities of the board chair: (1) assess the boards strengths and weaknesses and devise a plan to meet any needs; (2) clarify and adhere to mutual expectations and goals with the chief executive; (3) plan and conduct effective board meetings; and (4) ensure that the board is well informed about and engaged with the institutions needs and issues.
