Abstract | This checklist for beginning teachers (as well as school administrators, mentors, teacher supervisors, and student teachers) includes five sections: "Prepare Personally and Professionally" (the last year in college and getting hired as a teacher); "Success on the Job" (know when to say no, take advantage of a mentor, network to keep current, stress management and self-care, and know what one does and why); "Communication Skills" (telephoning parents, written communication, parent conferences, and communicating with colleagues and administrators); "Classroom Management" (create workable plans, access students' interests and knowledge, accept today's students, vary teaching strategies to reach today's students, and the special needs student); and "Advice from Cyberspace" (ideas gathered for new teachers by posting a message soliciting information on various message boards).
