AbstractThis book, based on the work of a teacher and community development expert with many years of teaching adult education in numerous developing countries all over the world, provides a process for teaching and learning with adults. The book is illustrated with stories from the author's experience and examples that show how to begin, set up, carry out and evaluate adult education programs. The 17 chapters of the book are organized in three parts. Part One, A Process That Works and Why, contains three chapters that cover 12 principles for effective adult learning, quantum thinking (as opposed to a Newtonian mechanistic paradigm) and dialogue education, and how the principles inform course design. The main part of the book, Part 2, is called The Principles in Practice: Across Cultures and Around the World. Each of the 12 chapters of this section focuses on one of these 12 principles for adult learning: (1) needs and resource assessment; (2) safety; (3) sound relationships; (4) sequence and reinforcement; (5) praxis; (6) respect; (7) using the whole person; (8) immediacy; (9) new roles; (10) teamwork; (11) engagement; and (12) accountability using illustrative events in various parts of the world. The final part, Becoming an Effective Teacher of Adults, contains two chapters that review the 12 principles and quantum thinking and discuss knowing how one knows. An appendix suggests methods of needs assessment. Seventy-six references are listed. (KC)
