| Abstract | This is a report on minority student enrollment during the fall 2001 semester at Piedmont Virginia Community College (PVCC). The report is designed to display longitudinal minority enrollment data and trends in order to assist future minority student recruitment and retention. Results show that the total enrollment of minority students attending PVCC dropped for the first time in 4 years. The minority enrollment at PVCC rose from 700 in 1998 to 872 in 2000; however, only 803 minority students enrolled in 2001. More than one-third of all minority students at PVCC are African American, with Asian and Hispanic students being the next two largest groups, respectively. More women attend the community college across all racial distinctions, with African American students showing the biggest gender difference in attendance. The average age for minority students is 27 years. Results also show that most minority students reside in proximity to the community college, and that most are part-time and returning students. The number of new and transfer minority students to the college are low compared with previous years. Further, the number of African-American students in transfer, technical, and occupational programs declined in 2001, while the other minority groups' participation remained steady. (MKF) |
