| Abstract | This book provides a novel approach to multilingual phenomena as discussed in psycholinguistic research, drawing together (second) language acquisition theory, bilingualism research, and dynamic systems theory. The focus of the book is theoretical, and the suggested model is intended to provide a framework for future research in general and applied research. Nine chapters include: (1) "Introductory Remarks"; (2) "Stages in Research on Multilingualism" (e.g., double monolingualism hypothesis and transfer as an explanation of linguistic deficiency); (3) "Transfer Reconsidered" (e.g., transfer in research on bilingualism and the paradox of transfer); (4) "Universal Grammar Reviewed" (e.g., theory of competence and tenets of universal grammar language acquisition theory); (5)"Multilingual Proficiency Reassessed" (e.g., defining multilingualism and multilingual variation); (6) "A Dynamic Model of Multilingualism Developed" (e.g., introduction to dynamic systems approaches and language maintenance); (7) "A Dynamic Model of Multilingualism Analysed" (e.g., conceptual outline of dynamic model of multilingualism and how factors relate in DMM); (8) "Holism Defended: A Systems Interpretation" (e.g., double monolingualism and modularity and holism and systems theory); and (9) "Limitations, Conclusions and Outlook" (e.g., theoretical limitations and related concepts of DMM).
