Abstract | This book features a case study of one little girl (Theresa) out of a first grade class of 23 in Starkville, Mississippi, and how she learned how to read and write. The book is arranged chronologically, from the beginning of the semester on August 15 until December 12, just before Christmas, in the form of journal entries, parent-teacher notes, and the like relating the day-by-day happenings in the classroom. Frequently, teachers' journal entries concerning Theresa were shared with her parents, who in turn, would send notes in to the teachers (concerning Theresa's reading and writing experiences at home.) The book's pages chronicle the journey undertaken in the classroom and Theresa's growth in learning to read and write. (Contains 13 references and a 21-item children's literature list.) (NKA) |
