AbstractRecent changes in the nature of work in Australia's process manufacturing industry and their impact on operative-level workers and vocational education and training (VET) were examined. Structured interviews were conducted with training or human resource managers in 16 firms representing a cross-section of small, medium, and large enterprises across New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia, and Western Australia. Structured questionnaires were also administered to a total of 17 workers from the 16 firms. Of the 16 firms, 12 had introduced major workplace changes within the past 5 years. In most firms, those workplace changes involved multiskilling of operative-level workers, greater levels of responsibility and decision making, and mastery of additional skills. Elimination of line supervisors and, in some cases, replacement of line supervisors by work teams, were additional important trends. It was concluded that training programs for operator-level jobs in the process manufacturing sector should address emerging soft skill demands and underpinning skills in the basic sciences of physics and chemistry. The following were among the specific soft skills recommended: enhanced oral and written communication skills; team-working and conflict resolution skills; skills in adjusting to workplace change; and problem-solving skills. (The bibliography lists 16 references. A statistical profile of the industry and the questionnaires are appended.) (MN)
