AbstractThis teacher's guide presents teaching suggestions and presentation materials about sustainable development, important trends that could lead to human and environmental disasters in the future if they continue unchecked, and how each country has a different path to sustainable development. The lesson is divided into six parts and may be completed in two or more class periods as desired. Student handouts include: (1) "Facts about Global Warming and Ozone Depletion"; (2) "National and International Efforts toward Sustainable Development"; (3) "Defining Sustainable Development"; (4) "Indicators of Sustainable Development"; (5) "Case Study: United States"; (6) "Case Study: Thailand"; (7) "Case Study: Tanzania"; and (8) "Planning for Sustainable Development." Transparency masters are titled: (1) "Trends and Projections in World Population Growth, 1750-2050"; (2) "Projected Population of the World, 1990-2150"; (3) "Trends in Deforestation and Population Growth, 1850-1980"; (4) "Soil Degradation as a Percent of Vegetated Land, 1945-90"; (5) "Global Fossil Fuel Consumption, 1950-90"; (6) "How the Greenhouse Effect Works"; (7) "Atmospheric CO2 Concentrations, 1860-1990"; (8) "Stratospheric Ozone Depletion, 1979-91"; (9) "The Road to Sustainable Development"; (10) "U.S. Motor Vehicle Trips by Purpose and Length, 1983-84"; and (11) "Comparison of Gasoline Prices and Motor Vehicle Use."
