Abstract | This paper discusses the relationship between mother tongue, foreign language, and thinking. It is based on a pilot study carried out with 30 Finnish university students majoring in English philology. All students filled in a questionnaire and four were selected for an interview. In the questionnaires and interviews, the students were asked to reflect upon their feelings and experiences about the relation of linguistic elements and mental images, and especially the role of English, in their thinking. The results suggest that thinking in a foreign language is largely context-bound: certain subjects and situations were more easily associated with English than with Finnish. A non-Cartesian, systemic approach to mind and language is proposed. Some theoretical and methodological issues involved are discussed. (Author/VWL) |
