AbstractThis teacher's resource book for economics education in grades two to four contains lessons that are meant to be integrated across the curriculum. The purpose of the lessons is to help children learn about their ability to make choices and their responsibility for the consequences of those choices. Decision-making is a skill that, like any other skill, is learned through practice. The book introduces the 6-step decision-making process and helps students practice this skill throughout the lessons. An integral part of the book is service-learning and its alternatives. Other lessons in the book consider human capital, careers choices, the world of work, and consumption and production. The book is divided into four units: Unit One--"Choices"--(1) "Scarcity"; (2) "Alternatives"; (3)"Alternatives Have Advantages and Disadvantages"; (4) "Choice"; (5) "Opportunity Cost"; and (6) "Decision Making"; Unit Two--"Work, School, and My Human Capital"--(7) "Goods and Services, Work and Workers"; (8) "The Work I Do"; (9) "I Am a Bundle of Human Capital"; and (10) "School Is an Investment in Human Capital"; Unit Three--"Learning to Produce"--(11) "Workers Use Other Resources"; (12) "Inputs, Plan, Outputs"; (13) "Learning to Produce"; (14) "Practice"; and (15) "Teaching Others Builds Human Capital"; Unit Four--"An Economy"--(16) "Entrepreneurs and the Interdependence of Buyers and Sellers"; (17) "Markets and Exchange"; and (18) "The Labor Market: My Human Capital Pays Off." A service-learning project, an extensive bibliography, and a glossary are appended. The student journal booklet helps children keep track of what they are learning and enables them to develop a perspective on the entire set of lessons. It contains a set of practical economics exercise sheets for primary students in grades two to four to complete. The exercises in the booklet include service-learning activities, decision-making activities, goods and services activities, work-related activities, human capital activities, and skill development activities.
