Abstract | This book helps school systems and teacher mentors achieve a systematic approach to teacher induction and mentoring programs, offering over 60 checklists, planning guidelines, and assessment tools. Part 1, "Preparation for Mentor Training," includes (1) "From Master Teacher to Masterful Mentor," (2) "Assessing Your Coaching and Mentoring Aptitude," and (3) "Sizing up the Situation." Part 2, "Competency Training Modules," presents modules on eight competencies: "Understanding the Coaching and Mentoring Role"; "Promoting Collaborative Learning"; "Nurturing the Novice"; "Developing Your Performance-Coaching Skills"; "Modeling and Coaching Effective Teaching Standards"; "Modeling and Coaching Effective Classroom Management Standards"; "Displaying Sensitivity to Individual Differences among Learners"; and "Willingness To Assume a Redefined Professional Role." Each competency includes a competency statement and knowledge base highlights. Part 3, "Appendix," presents checklists and planning guides in such areas as observing expert teachers, field internship evaluation, mentor teacher preference, agenda for first-year teacher mentors, criteria for unit plan evaluation, lesson plan template, and daily reflection guide.
