Abstract | This document consists of six issues of the ARL (Association of Research Libraries) Newsletter, covering the year 2001. Each issue of the newsletter includes some or all of the following sections: "Current Issues," reports from the Office of Scholarly Communication, Office for Management Services, and Coalition for Networked Information, "Federal Relations,""Statistics and Measurement,""Diversity,""ARL Activities," and a calendar of events. Topics covered include: the handbook "Declaring Independence: A Guide to Creating Community-Controlled Science Journals"; ALA and ARL file brief in the case "Tasini v. New York Times"; the Uniform Computer Information Transactions Act; ARL salary survey for 2000-2001; recent Systems and Procedures Exchange (SPEC) publications; Leadership & Career Development Program's call for nominations and applications; the Big 12 Plus Libraries Consortium meeting in Tempe Arizona to discuss the "Principles for Emerging Systems of Scholarly Publishing"; recent innovations of scholarly communication in economics; ARL-sponsored symposium "The New Culture Service Quality"; the university in a digitized, commercialized age; metadata harvesting and the Open Archives initiative; competition in scholarly journal publishing; the state of diversity in research libraries; the paths to reform scientific publishing; the Collaborative Digital Reference Service; and the ARL E-Metrics project.
