Abstract | Noting that preparing teachers to be expert practitioners is a complex task, this handbook is intended to assist teacher educators in creating a comprehensive staff development program within a school or district, or in designing a course for teachers at the preservice or advanced degree level. The handbook gives step-by-step instructions for conducting five to eight workshops/class sessions for each component of the framework presented in "Building the Primary Classroom." These training materials model an active learning approach in which participants are encouraged to work together to brainstorm ideas and share knowledge. The handbook focuses on the six strategies of the conceptual framework: (1) knowing children; (2) building a classroom community; (3) establishing a classroom structure; (4) guiding learning; (5) assessing learning; and (6) building a partnership with families. The handbook is divided into chapters for each of the six strategies, beginning with a chart listing the workshops related to that strategy. Each workshop includes notes for the leader, materials and estimated time required, and reproducible handouts and overheads. (KB) |
