Abstract | The National Conference of State Legislatures (NCSL) has designated the week of September 17-21, 2001, as "Back to School Week." During this week, state legislators from throughout the country are encouraged by NCSL to contact principals and teachers in their respective districts and arrange for classroom visits to help students understand the pressures, conflicts, and difficulties that legislators deal with in trying to solve public problems. This booklet contains lesson plans for teachers and state legislators to use in middle school classrooms during that week. Using outside resource persons to co-teach lessons with classroom teachers in an interactive format has been recognized by many in the field of law-related and civic education as "best practice." Eight lessons are divided into three sections. The first one, "Lessons To Precede Legislator Visit, contains (1) "Getting To Know You: Student/Legislator Inventory"; (2) "Do You Trust Our Government?"; (3) "The Mindwalk"; (4) "What Is Public Policy?"; and (5) "A Day in the Life." The second one, "Lessons During Legislator Visit, contains (6) "A Day in the Life"; (7) "Public Hearing Simulation: How Should Our Guest Legislator Decide?"; and (8) "The Legislative In-Basket"). The third one, "Lessons After Legislator Visit, contains (9) "Debriefing the Visit: A Legislator Resume." (BT) |
