| Abstract | Drawing on 8 years of classroom-centered research, the Book Club program integrates instruction in reading, writing, speaking, and listening. Student-led discussion groups form the heart of the program, and they provide a real-world context for learning that motivates children and fosters the development of both academic and social skills. This guide contains comprehensive resources and clear guidelines that enable teachers to implement, facilitate, and assess the program in fourth-, fifth-, and sixth-grade classrooms. The guide first provides information about the structure of the Book Club program and about classroom management and assessment, as well as teaching tips. It then presents lesson plans to be used with eight popular children's book selections and also offers multi-book units.
