Abstract	The chapters in this collection discuss issues related to the increasing internationalism of higher education, as education moves beyond the boundaries of the nation state. Developments such as the European Union and educational cooperation in the Americas give a new meaning to the supra national dimension of education. The chapters are: (1) "The European Dimension in Higher Education: An Excursion into the Modern Use of Historical Analogues" (Guy Neave); (2) "The Changing Context of Coordination in Higher Education: The Federal-State Experience in the United States" (David D. Dill); (3) "The Role and Position of Research and Doctoral Training in the European Union" (Antonio Ruberti); (4) "Higher Education in the Process of European Integration, Globalizing Economies and Mobility of Students and Staff" (Alberto Amaral); (5) "'Our' Colleges for Post-Compulsory Education: Observations on a Subdued Debate" (Fons van Wieringen); and (6) "The Higher Education Policy of the European Union: With or against the Member States" (Kurt De Wit and Jef Verhoeven).
