| Abstract | Suggesting that, given the right tools and encouragement to do so, all children will write, this book describes the technique of "written conversation" in which two partners write back and forth to each other. This coproduced book serves as both a means for communication and expression and as a source of data about the child's knowledge of the sound-symbol system. The written conversation technique described in the book is a multifaceted teaching tool that will enable teachers to focus on what students can do and jumpstart students who have encountered early difficulties. Chapters in the book discuss easy ways to get started with written conversations, pitfalls to avoid, the types of information that can be obtained from observing students, and how and when to respond in ways that will nudge students into the next steps of conventional spelling. It also contains many children's writing samples and teachers' and students' comments to show written conversation in action. (Contains 21 references.) (RS) |
