Abstract | Through an exploration of the literature base, this paper focuses on structural and environmental dimensions of faculty development. It concludes by presenting a developmental mindset based on students, teaching, and knowledge that is framed in a structure of collegiality, service, and self-renewal. Such a mindset is difficult to maintain because it does not allow individual faculty members to remain in comfort zones for long periods of time. The personal accountability of faculty members becomes the driving force behind sustained quality. Such an approach is more likely to be successful than external efforts forced on faculty.
