Abstract | The use of adjunct faculty members is largely dictated and controlled by institutional needs and policies that exist outside academic departments. Within those institutional frameworks, however, there exist substantial opportunities for departments to improve the working conditions of adjunct faculty members. Through the judicious use of resources, department chairpersons can play an important role in determining how the adjunct faculty members view, and are viewed by, the institution. This paper discusses the specific challenges and opportunities faced at Otterbein College, where the author is chair of the Department of Communication. It presents practical hiring, orientation, assessment, and allocation strategies developed for use in the Department of Communication that chairpersons can use to improve the working conditions of adjunct faculty members.
