Abstract | This document is intended to help teachers teach their students about the Selective Service registration requirement and the need for young men to register with the Selective Service System in order to maintain their eligibility for federal loans, grants, and other educational benefits. The first 50% of the document consists of 10 sections devoted to the following aspects of the Selective Service System: (1) the Selective Service System today; (2) persons who must register with the Selective Service System; (3) the history of conscription in the United States; (4) the history of the Selective Service System; (5) the organization and functions of the Selective Service System; (6) the draft process; (7) the lottery; (8) Selective Service classification categories; (9) the duties and responsibilities of local and appeal boards; and (10) the claim and appeal process. The remaining 50% of the document consists of print versions of a Microsoft PowerPoint presentation on the Selective Service System that is available for downloading from the World Wide Web at http://www.sss.gov/tg2000.htm and covers the following topics: key elements of the Military Selective Service Act; the history of the Selective Service System; and the purposes, duties, and responsibilities of local draft boards.
