Abstract | This document presents the full revised course descriptions for Florida exceptional student education in grades 9-12. Courses incorporate the Florida standards for a special diploma. Requirements include a list of related benchmarks from the state standards for each level of functioning: independent, supported, and participatory. Introductory material discusses changes in this revision, explains the sections of each course description, provides a chart for determining levels of functioning, and explains the new course performance objectives. Each course description includes a course header with the subject area, course name and number, changes, and credits; major concepts/content; any special notes such as legal requirements about the intended student population; and course requirements. Courses are grouped into categories: (1) academic subject areas (e.g., reading, life skills communication, mathematics, health and safety, social studies, and life management and transition); (2) supported level courses (academic, communications, personal, and leisure, and social skills for functional living); (3) special skills courses (preparation for post-school adult living, skills for students with specific disabilities, and learning strategies); (4) miscellaneous (physical education, driver education, visual and performing arts); (5) gifted (research methodology, externships); and (6) vocational education (exploratory, practical arts, business technology, industrial, and career preparation).
