Abstract | Early Childhood Research and Practice (ECRP), a peer-reviewed, Internet-only journal sponsored by the ERIC Clearinghouse on Elementary and Early Childhood Education (ERIC/EECE), covers topics related to the development, care, and education of children from birth to approximately age 8. ECRP emphasizes articles reporting on practice-related research and on issues related to practice, parent participation, and policy. ECRP also includes articles and essays that present opinions and reflections. The first part of this issue of ECRP contains the following major articles: (1) "Readiness for School: A Survey of State Policies and Definitions" (Gitanjali Saluja, Catherine Scott-Little, and Richard M. Clifford); (2) "Conceptualizing the Professional Role in Early Childhood Centers: Emerging Profiles in Four European Countries" (Pamela Oberhuemer); (3) "Language Development and Science Inquiry: The Head Start on Science and Communication Program" (Evelyn R. Klein, Penny L. Hammrich, Stefanie Bloom, and Anika Ragins); and (4) "Starting Child Care: What Young Children Learn about Relating to Adults in the First Weeks of Starting Child Care" (Carmen Dalli). The Observations and Reflections section contains the article, "Early Childhood Educators and the FIS Grant Program: An Interview with Naomi Karp." The Features section contains an article on the Project Approach: "The Hairy Head Project" (Barbara Gallick). The issue concludes with an ERIC database search on science education and young children, and a description of new ERIC/EECE publications and activities, along with general information and links related to the journal.
