| Abstract | This paper presents the most current thinking on how to best structure adult learning programs, noting that adult learners demand a convenient program which is specially designed with their learning style in mind. They learn best in an interactive format with heavy emphasis on the practical application of their learning. The paper discusses the development of adult education in the 20th century, examines the design of adult education programs, and describes today's adult learners. It highlights the design of the Division of Adult and Professional Studies at Indiana Wesleyan University. The university's model features a semi-independent structure, interactive learning in study groups, and experiential learning. The model is an application of adult learning theory and includes scattered sites and evening and weekend scheduling to make education accessible when other programs would create barriers. The interactive nature of the classes and a curriculum rooted in students' everyday experiences motivate these learners to persist toward meeting their educational goals. Retention data for this program are examined and implications for adult education are discussed. (Contains 31 references.) (SM) |
