Abstract | This paper reviews what it calls a classic book in the field of higher education, 1952's "The Development and Scope of Higher Education," by Richard Hofstadter and C. DeWitt Hardy. The paper describes the main points of the book, which was written as part of a series, "Nature and Needs of Higher Education," prepared for the Commission on Financing Higher Education and sponsored by the Association of American Universities. The paper asserts that Hofstadter provides a superb overview of the historical development of college curricula, and it discusses Hofstadter's view that the primary weakness of American higher education is the assumption that education ought to pay its own way and continuously justify itself to others. The paper then discusses Hardy's thesis on the transformation by modern scholarship and scientific method of research into a profession, and his position on the value of a general education. (EV) |
