AbstractThis easy-to-read book with worksheets and instructional guides details a simple organizational portfolio method that has been used for over 6 years to obtain over one-half million dollars in scholarships for migrant students. Following an introduction, chapter 2, "Path of Hard Work," discusses scholarship qualifications such as a 3.0 grade point average, SAT scores, community service, extracurricular activities, work experience, and awards. Chapter 3 describes how to organize a scholarship application portfolio. The first step is a worksheet with short- and long-range goals and action steps to accomplish them. A scholarship checklist is presented that helps the student visualize what needs to be completed and added to the portfolio. Sources of information for obtaining scholarships are listed, and 21 Web sites of scholarship resources are given. A brief section warns about scholarship scams. The importance of student essays is explained, and pointers on writing effective ones are given. Three sample scholarship essays by migrant students are provided. Scholarship recommendation letters are a key element in determining scholarship awards. A suggested form for requesting scholarship recommendation letters is supplied, along with advice on when to request one, how many to request, what information to supply with the request, and from whom to request them. A form for a scholarship nomination application is supplied, and advice is given for completing the application. (TD)
