AbstractThis Kids Count report provides statistical data on several indicators of child well-being in Newark, New Jersey. Indicators were grouped into seven categories: (1) Demographics (including population, number of registered voters, income levels, and persons living below poverty level); (2) Family Well-Being (including average number of children in families receiving public assistance, residents served by Women, Infants, and Children (WIC), children in families receiving food stamps, substantiated child abuse casements, out-of-home placements, estimated federal Earned Income Tax Credit, number of licensed child care centers, and homeless child and parent demographics); (3) Child Health (including number of births, percent low birth weight, percent with no prenatal care, percent unmarried mothers, number of births to teens, infant mortality rate, number of child and teen deaths, vaccination of 2-year-olds, children with asthma, children with active tuberculosis, children with AIDS, sexually transmitted diseases, findings of Child Health Survey, percent of seventh and eighth graders using various drugs, and health clinic data; (4) Mental Health (including number of children served for various types of problems); (5) Environmental Health (including lead poisoning cases, lead levels in drinking water, number of toxic waste sites, and vacant lots converted into active community or school gardens); (6) Education (including enrollment in public schools, student ethnicity, attendance rates, number of students receiving reduced or free meals at school, number of gifted/talented students, violent incidents and weapon possession, student suspensions, homeless students, number of students in after-school development programs, proficiency test scores, Scholastic Aptitude Test scores, graduation rates, dropout reports, and post-graduation plans); and (7) Juvenile Justice (including number of juvenile arrests for 1994 to 1998, including serious offenses.)
