AbstractThis booklet is intended to facilitate the full participation of Minnesota parents of children with disabilities in the Individualized Education Program (IEP) process. The booklet begins with a brief discussion of what an IEP is, when IEPs must be in effect, IEP meetings, the IEP team, and parent participation. It next stresses the necessity of the IEP team considering four areas: (1) the child's strengths, (2) parental concerns regarding the child's education, (3) results of the most recent evaluation, and (4) certain special factors. The guide then details requirements of the IEP form with sections for: general information, present levels of educational performance and educational needs, transition planning, statement of measurable annual goals, progress reporting, special education and related services, adaptations in general and special education, least restrictive environment justification, Minnesota accountability testing, transfer of rights at age of majority, and extended school year. The booklet also covers requirements for parent action and IEP accountability. An appendix includes definitions, a sample IEP state-recommended form, a transition grid, a listing of special factors in IEP development, a state list of adaptations, a high school Profile of Learning Chart for IEP planning, and information about the Pacer Center.
