Abstract | This booklet presents a synthesis of the principles of effective teaching that have emerged from research in classrooms. It addresses generic aspects of curriculum, instruction, and assessment as well as classroom organization and management practices that support effective instruction. It focuses on learning outcomes, but recognizes the need for a supportive climate and positive student attitudes toward schooling, teachers, and classmates. Much of the research support for these principles comes from studies of relationships between classroom processes (measured through observation systems) and student outcomes (particularly gains in standardized achievement scores). The booklet contains 12 chapters as follows: (1) "A Supportive Classroom Climate"; (2) "Opportunity to Learn"; (3)"Curricular Alignment"; (4) "Establishing Learning Orientations"; (5) "Coherent Content"; (6) "Thoughtful Discourse"; (7) "Practice and Application Activities"; (8) "Scaffolding Students' Task Engagement"; (9) "Strategy Teaching"; (10) "Cooperative Learning"; (11) "Goal-Oriented Assessment"; and (12) "Achievement Expectations." (Contains 31 references.) (SM) |
