AbstractThe Exploring America's Communities (EAC) project, sponsored by the American Association of Community Colleges, involved 41 competitively-selected community colleges working to strengthen the teaching and learning of American history, literature, and culture on their campuses. Published as part of the project, these four newsletters describe the project and report on progress made by the participating colleges. The first newsletter, published in February 1996, describes the goals of the project, provides a list of colleges selected to participate, and describes a related teleconference. The second issue, published in June 1996, describes conferences held by EAC college teams to work with project mentors, provides brief biographies of 15 EAC mentors, and presents updates of progress made by 11 participating colleges. The third issue, from October 1996, presents "The American Identity...A Work in Progress" (David Berry), describing issues of national identity, as well as progress reports from 14 colleges. The final issue of the project, published in January 1997, describes a national conference held to determine outcomes from the EAC and to plan for continuing the initiatives, presents "Service Learning and the Humanities: Partners in the Quest for Common Ground" (Robert Franco), and presents updates from 11 colleges.
