AbstractAn overview is given of the main themes, perspectives, and debates in the teaching of English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL). Combining historical, sociolinguistic, and cross-cultural analysis of the language needs of adult immigrants, the discussion addresses issues related to ESOL learning and teaching in Great Britain. An introductory chapter offers sociolinguistic and historical background on ESOL instruction in Britain, and the second chapter looks at trends in second language research. The four subsequent chapters describe a survey of 133 adult ESOL students in 13 British adult education centers concerning their demographic characteristics, individual and family education, self and parent English language skills, patterns of language use, language attitudes, and language learning motivation. Focus of the analysis is on the social and psychological aspects of the student population, and findings on the sociolinguistic correlates of English language proficiency in this population are presented. Results of interviews with 30 teachers concerning the current status and future prospects for ESOL teaching in Britain are also presented.
