AbstractThe pamphlet discusses how colleges and universities can protect themselves and their employees from liability for copyright infringement, and proposes some guidelines to keep most uses of copyrighted material within the law. The principles underlying the Copyright Act of 1976 are explained, including the four-factor test to determine whether a use of a work constitutes fair use: (1) purpose and character of use; (2) nature of the copyrighted work; (3) amount and substantiality of copying; and (4) effect of the use of the work. Interdependence of the four factors is emphasized. The 1976 "Agreement on Guidelines for Classroom Copying in Not-for-Profit Educational Institutions with Respect to Books and Periodicals" is explained, and applications of copyright law to particular circumstances (libraries, performances, music, audiovisual works, multimedia works, creation of ad hoc anthologies, use of factual information, and computers on campus) are discussed. How to obtain copyright permission for published works and penalties for infringement are also explained. Guidelines for classroom copying, educational uses of music, off-air recording of broadcasts for educational purposes, and fair use guidelines for multimedia are appended. (Contains 72 references.)
