Abstract | This document, the sixth in a series on diversity in the classroom, encourages schools to reflect on and explore current research and practical applications regarding gender issues, both inside and outside the classroom. Section 1, "Introduction," discusses what gender equity is and is not. Section 2, "Gender Equity is Important," explains that everyone benefits from a gender equitable classroom and examines various inequitable practices and their effects. Section 3, "Interactions," examines teacher/student interactions; the generic he and she and implications for the classroom; teacher contact time, level of achievement, and gender; and student/student interactions. Section 4, "The Classroom," discusses the effects of instruction by male and female teachers, eliminating gender bias in teaching strategies, and the effects of the physical classroom environment. Section 5, "School Ethos," examines the importance of the school environment to gender equity, offering a school ethos checklist. It also discusses the transition from elementary to high school, self-esteem and adolescents, career choices, dealing with sexual harassment, and devising a sexual harassment policy. Section 6, "Supporting Gender Equity Beyond the School," discusses parent participation, toys, television/movies, books, and community. Section 7, "Gender Discrimination," presents examples of widespread discrimination within a school district and explains how to eliminate it, noting legal considerations and gender equity. The appendix presents an observation guide and worksheet. (SM) |
