Abstract	This report summarizes 1998 activities of the Inter-American Foundation (IAF), an independent agency of the U.S. government. The IAF promotes equitable, participatory, and sustainable self-help development in Latin America and the Caribbean by awarding grants directly to local organizations, as well as by entering into partnerships with public- and private-sector entities to scale up support and mobilize resources for grassroots development. In 1998, IAF's primary objective was to bring together communities, governments, and businesses to invest in local development. Community leaders increasingly recognize that no sector alone can confront the widespread challenge and hazards of poverty. In support of cross-sectorial partnerships, IAF awarded 84 new grants and 14 supplemental grants and carried out other program activities totaling $20 million. About 34 percent of grant funding went to food and agriculture programs; 26 percent to enterprise development/management; 21 percent to education and training programs; and the remainder to community services, research and dissemination, and ecodevelopment. Educational programs included strengthening community rural schools, training health promoters and day care workers, vocational and technical training for youth, increasing participation of indigenous peoples in local governments, business education, agricultural education, leadership training, and health promotion and training. This report briefly describes new and supplemental grants by country, corporate outreach initiatives, fellowship programs, and IAF publications and videos, and summarizes financial information.
