AbstractResearch on changes and issues in workplace learning in Australia over the past 6 years was reviewed. Special attention was paid to four topics: importance of learning in the workplace; nature of workplace learning; factors affecting the quality of workplace learning; and recognition of workplace learning. Selected findings were as follows: (1) simple notions of transfer of skills learned in the workplace are dubious; (2) although some learning in the workplace is highly contextualized and enterprise specific, other examples are more generic; (3) measuring the outcomes of training and quantifying its costs and benefits are possible but complex; (4) the best kinds of workplace learning involve appropriate links between formal training and informal workplace learning; (5) good research on learning in the workplace must take proper account of the diversity of variables in the workplace environment/culture; and (6) language, numeracy, and literacy are capable of being addressed in a holistic way along with other changes as workplace reform is implemented. Areas identified as requiring additional research included the following: training outcomes; training costs and benefits; application of cognitive theory to training activity design; and roles of language, numeracy, and literacy in workplace learning and change.
