AbstractThis publication shows the diversity of the Australian vocational education and training system (VET) at the client, provider, and program levels. The report includes all VET delivery by TAFE (Technical and Further Education) and other government providers, registered community providers, some VET delivered in schools, and publicly funded delivery by private providers in 1998. The report includes detailed statistics for Australia as a whole and or its eight states and territories, presented in 21 tables as well as narratives. Seven appendixes include notes, a glossary, lists of training organizations and locations, financial data, classifications, and other data. Highlights for 1998 include the following: (1) 1.54 million students undertook vocational programs in 1998, which is a 5 percent increase over 1997 and represents 12 percent of Australia's working-age population; (2) in the 10 years from 1989 to 1998, the number of students in vocational programs increased by 65 percent; (3) persons aged 15-24 years comprised 38 percent of students and took 54 percent of the hours of training; (4) community and private providers accounted for 25 percent of the students; and (5) $4.01 billion was spent on VET nationally in 1998, a 1.4 percent increase over 1997.
