Abstract	This analysis focuses on the question of whether or not pictures or illustrations are language. Discussion focuses on the differences between pictures and language, with attention to structure, geometry, grammar, rules of interpretation, and semantics. The case is made that pictures are not language essentially because: (1) they do not have symbols that are not arbitrary; (2) their interpretation is not dependent on code; (3) and they do not have syntax. Further discussion looks at what pictures are and whether they are a form of communication, as well as at the psychological differences between language and pictures. A list containing 24 differences between language and pictures is appended. Contains 34 references. (VWL)
