Abstract	Although not all current jobs require basic computer skills, technological advances in society have created new jobs and changed the ways many existing jobs are performed. Clearly, workers who are proficient in technology have a greater advantage in the current workplace and the need for technologically proficient workers will only continue to grow. Two aspects of technology proficiency include the demand for information technology (IT) workers and the need for all workers to become more proficient in the use of technology. Because they are in short supply, IT workers have great flexibility in today's job market, including the ability to make frequent job changes. Technology is present even in nontechnical workplaces; consequently, the job security of workers who are not specifically classified as IT workers is also tied to technological proficiency. As adult, career, and vocational educators prepare workers who are technologically proficient, they should ask themselves three things: what individuals really need to exist in the work environment; what curricular and instructional responses are required to prepare workers; and how possible inequalities affecting individuals' ability to acquire and maintain technological proficiency should be addressed.
