Abstract | Students encounter numerous volatile situations throughout their school days. These videotapes and the accompanying teacher's manual and student handouts provide ways in which students can creatively assess and resolve these conflicts. The videotapes are designed for the whole school community: students and parents, teaching and non-teaching staff. The videotape, "Negotiation," addresses the issues of interpersonal conflict and outlines a five-step conflict solving approach that can be used to work out conflicts without the aid of a third party; it also demonstrates how to conduct role-playing. In the "Mediation" video, peer mediators demonstrate in detail a four-phase mediation process and encounter two circumstances where the process breaks down--when dealing with issues of alleged sexual harassment and racism. An optional video entitled "Vignettes" contains "eye witness" dramatic scenarios. The videos help students understand that conflict is a normal part of life, showing them how to recognize different styles of conflict resolution. Role playing is emphasized throughout and students are asked to give considered responses to questions. (RJM) |
