AbstractThis Kids Count data book examines statewide trends in the well-being of Virginia's children. The statistical portrait is based on five general areas of children's well being: health, safety, education, families, and economic factors. Key indicators in these five areas include: (1) prenatal care rates; (2) low birthweight; (3) child deaths; (4) sexually transmitted disease rates; (5) psychiatric hospitalizations; (6) physical fitness; (7) child abuse and neglect; (8) teen violent deaths; (9) delinquency; (10) substance abuse rates; (11) weapons possession; (12) violent crime arrests; (13) standardized test results; (14) literacy rates; (15) school dropout rates; (16) per-pupil expenditures; (17) special education enrollment; (18) school suspension rates; (19) day care capacity; (20) Head Start enrollments; (21) number of births to teens; (22) number of births to single mothers; (23) out-of-home placements; (24) reduced lunch enrollees; (25) unemployment rates; and (26) average income. Following a brief profile of the state, special issues for Virginia's youth are addressed including homelessness, inadequate health coverage, single-parent families, immunization, motor vehicle injuries, and child poverty. The remainder and bulk of the report provides data, by county, of the key indicators for the years 1993 through 1997. (SD)
