AbstractThis booklet addresses issues concerning the various responsibilities of trustees on governing boards of public colleges and universities. Introductory information notes the increasing complexity and significance of the trusteeship role, and its unique context in public institutions. The booklet distinguishes between board and individual trustee functions and raises questions that underscore good practice for each function. The following board responsibilities are addressed: (1) setting and clarifying the institution's mission and purpose; (2) appointing the president or chancellor; (3) supporting the chief executive; (4) monitoring the chief executive's performance; (5) assessing board performance; (6) insisting on strategic planning; (7) reviewing educational and public service programs; (8) ensuring adequate resources; (9) ensuring good management; (10) preserving institutional independence; and (11) relating campus to community and community to campus. The individual trustee's responsibilities are discussed in terms of general standards of conduct, mutual expectations of board members and chief executives, and the commitment of trusteeship. Questions to consider when invited to serve on a board of trustees are suggested. (DB)
