Abstract | The Pennsylvania Action Research Network project was initiated in 1995-1996 to provide Pennsylvania literacy educators with the following: a better method for taking published research findings and testing and adapting them in their own classrooms; a way to study their own research ideas on a daily-action basis; and a systematic way to share and disseminate findings regarding best practices. The following were among the main outcomes of the 1997-1998 project year: the "Action Research Handbook and Planner" was revised; 4 mentors were trained to help 1997-1998 participants develop their own research projects; 20 participants received training; the proposal review process was refined to allow more expert input and improve quality control; and 19 research monographs were produced. In surveys of the project's present and past participants and their supervisors, all three groups gave high ratings to the training received by participants and the action research they conducted. (The report contains 53 references. Appendixes constituting approximately 40% of this document contain a list of 19 action research monographs published in 1997-1998 and the following 1996-1997 evaluations: external evaluation; field evaluation of 1997-1998 participants; impact evaluation of supervisors of participants in 1996-1997 projects; and impact evaluation of participants in 1996-1997 projects.)
