Abstract | Based on the "Taking On Turnover" training series conducted by the Center for the Child Care Workforce, this action guide for center-based child care teachers and directors is designed to assist in managing and reducing the increasingly serious problem of job turnover in the child care profession. Following several introductory sections, the guide consists of four main sections. Section 1, "The Problem of Turnover," addresses issues of understanding staff turnover, the impact on children, and the problem of underpayment. Section 2, "Assessing and Managing the Effects of Turnover in Your Program," addresses issues of helping children, staff, and parents cope with turnover, calculating the rate and costs of turnover, and making a plan to manage turnover. Section 3, "Making an Action Plan to Reduce Turnover in Your Program," is divided into five parts: (1) the program's work environment; (2) successful recruitment and hiring; (3) improving compensation; (4) improving substitute policies; and (5) putting together an individualized turnover reduction plan. The final section, "Beyond Individual Programs: Community Efforts To Take on Turnover," addresses the need for community-wide efforts to address staff turnover, and creating an action plan at the community level. The guide concludes with a section of references and additional sources. (SD) |
